Scarecrow invasion strikes Dewsbury town centre
A collection of more than 20 scarecrows popped up in shop windows and outside market stalls two weeks ago to celebrate Dewsbury Scarecrow Festival.
And on Wednesday, a panel of judges gave their verdicts on the handiwork of all the entrants.

Hide AdTown crier Laurie Gilbert was joined on the judging panel by the Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Martyn Bolt, and his wife, Liz.
Coun Bolt (Con, Mirfield) said: “It’s been a very high standard. Credit to the traders and organisations for putting something on like this.
“It’s been great to see Dewsbury on a sunny day.”
Reeds Rains was named the winning shop. The Kirkwood Hospice team and Cosmic Toys and Collectibles shared second place, and Cloggs Coffee Shop in third.
The winning market stall was Dawson’s Books, with Jem Cosmetics and Magic Col’s named runners-up.

Hide AdThe event, now in its second year, was organised by Dewsbury Market Traders’ Association with support from town retailers.
Chairwoman Trish Makepeace said: “There’s been more taking part this year and a lot of interest from the public.
“We’ve had people posing with the scarecrows and taking photographs with them.”
The association thanked the judges by serving refreshments and presented Mrs Bolt with a bouquet of flowers.

Hide AdMeanwhile, Kirklees Markets hosted face painting, balloon modelling, medal making, musical entertainment, street performers and a powerball challenge with the help of Dewsbury Sports Centre.
The winner and runners-up of a scarecrow trail quiz for families and shoppers will be named at Dewsbury on Sea on August 25.
